Have you ever wondered what a world would be like without imagination? Well, if you haven’t, then perhaps you haven’t imagined anything – and, sadly, you haven’t lived. The Book of Imagination (Phantasmic Wars) by El Holly tells readers that there is a place where all dreams and all imagined things, good and bad, end up. That place is called Phantasmagoria. But for everyone to survive in both Tom’s world and Phantasmagoria, there has to be a balance. When the school librarian loans Tom a book about imagination, Tom’s fascination with the concept draws him in. He doesn’t realize how powerful this book is. When he and many of his friends’ families become frozen in time and space while watching television one evening, Tom and his friends learn that the librarian’s half-brother, Morgrim, is set on destroying the balance between the two worlds. The librarian has tasked Tom and his friends to reset the balance before it’s too late and everyone, including Tom and his friends, becomes human popsicles, frozen forever.
EI Holly’s middle-grade novel, The Book of Imagination (Phantasmic Wars), has everything a young reader needs to spark their vibrant imagination. As Tom reads in this fantastic old book the librarian loaned him, “Imagination is the key.” It’s this key that drives the adventure forward from Tom’s world to the world of Phantasmagoria where everything dreamable is possible. The young characters in this novel are well developed and believable and their dialogue is fun to read. The narrative invites the reader into the story and the fast-action plot will have them hooked to the very end. The power of friendship rings throughout as Tom and his friends confront one unimaginable (or imaginable) fantasy after another. A wonderfully crafted tale that is so full of imagination.
