The Fall by Seth W. James follows Francesca Pieralisi, a director for the European Seawall Project, as she investigates submersible drone sabotage at Worker Village, a floating hub supporting the massive seawall. Cain assists her by collecting evidence, identifying the workers responsible, and confirming that a gang led by Tony Wong is complicit. The pair traces a heroin analog, “Good Times,” laced with arsenic, and tries to uncover an illegal brothel exploiting sex workers. Rescuing them would require a risky infiltration, the neutralization of the guards, and the destruction of the tainted drugs, all while avoiding authorities and public attention. They are also tracing broader conspiracies involving union leaders Gerhard Ewald and Konrad Schneckerl, funded off-world, to advance Siegfried Nibelung’s political goals and Wiktoria Kamczyk’s corporate interests, endangering both infrastructure and human lives.
Seth W. James’ The Fall is a fantastic science fiction novel with an amazing slew of calculated and decisive operations through Francesca and Cain. We get the full scope of investigative work that uses the settings to do a lot of the heavy lifting. Questioning witnesses turns into following leads, and tosses readers into really textured, cinematic environments, whether it is an apartment in Brussels, a disused hangar in Mauritania, or an impromptu landing on a rooftop bar. The tech is unique and lends itself to the grittiness of the space, from specialized firearms to an augmented-reality device. Unfortunately, those don't help save a person from a syphilis outbreak, right? The story moves at a spitfire pace, and with more than one operation underway simultaneously, the sequencing moving everything forward is managed with the skill of a seasoned author. Overall, this is an intelligent, fully immersive read with so many directions it can pursue. Recommended.
