The Holiday Boys & The Tall Man by Onicka Daniel is a story about two brothers as they face their greatest fear. Every night they dread the visit of the Tall Man. He is everything that could frighten anybody. With resounding steps, big eyes like the moon, long legs like trees, and clad in a big black cape that covers his frame, he terrifies the daylight out of the two young boys. At some point, they decide to go to their mother, who dismisses their claims and assures them that the Tall Man does not exist. Still, their fears persist. How can they ignore the "Clack! Clack!" of his footsteps as he approaches? Then the older brother comes up with a brilliant idea. Will their nightmares come to an end?
Onicka Daniel writes a fascinating story enhanced by thoughtful illustrations and, even more importantly, she writes a story with a great lesson. Two young boys struggle to cope every night with a scary form which makes them develop an intelligent way of dealing with their distress. As the boys continue to experience this fear, they turn to their mother. As I read the conversation between the youngsters and the mother, I realized how dire a situation like this can be and the importance of appreciating the magnitude of the issue based on the perspective of the child. Interestingly, the lesson in The Holiday Boys & The Tall Man is not only applicable to children, but also to anyone else who struggles with some type of fear. The story will create hope for any reader. Ultimately, I learned that what arouses apprehension in me can always be dealt with, even if the situation looks impossible.
