Seventeen-year-old Toekin has spent the last six years on his own, hiding from the evil Emperor and his powerful warriors and the madman who stole his parents. The last word his mother said to Toekin was “Hide” and that’s what he’s been doing. And very well, too. In fact, he does it so well that he’s managed to come up with a scheme to rob from the evil Emperor and give his takings to the poor. He’s a real Robin Hood. What he doesn’t realize is that he’s not alone. It’s a discovery he makes when delivering some stolen food to an orphanage and then later, injured, finds himself seeking help from the same orphanage.
Jeremy Thelin’s YA fantasy novel, The Path to Paz, is a powerful tale set in a mythical kingdom where magical powers, both good and evil, light and dark, struggle to take control. It’s also a coming of age novel, as young Toekin, who has taken care of himself for so long, finds a place for himself amongst others with similar talents, talents he didn’t realize he had. As the plot thickens, the orphans who took Toekin in and welcomed him as one of their own seem to mature and take control of their futures and their amazing powers. Toekin, too, matures from a boy who once raided the Emperor’s trade wagons to a power that the evil dark characters never expected to confront.
There is a holy grail quest that sets the reader on edge as the novel quickly becomes a real page-turner, full of conspiracies and magical battles and superhuman powers. This is a compelling story of good versus evil and light versus dark. From the sage words of his kindly mentor, the reader, as does Toekin, must “Remember, light will always chase the dark; never the opposite.”
