Araminta Barrington has several problems. The first is that her father was a notorious and awful gambler; then there’s the fact that her brother died before he could make any headway in erasing the debt. So rather than marry for love, young Araminta is forced to seek out a marriage of convenience to a wealthy suitor. As Miss Barrington, our reluctant rose, has a suitor in her sights in the kindly Sir Timothy Stanton, she meets the handsome rogue of our tale, Jasper Devereaux. The set-up for The Rogue’s Reluctant Rose isn’t original but it does have the requisite elements that one comes to expect from a Regency romance. Daphne du Bois paints a wonderful, if at times long-winded, picture of Araminta’s strong will to provide for her remaining family and keep the family home.

The one aspect I would have loved to see more of would be with the Marquis of Chestleton. For much of the story he seems like an arrogant jerk, but having read more than my fair share of historical romances I knew there had to be a reason. Unfortunately, the reason came so late in the story that it was hard to forgive his behavior or ignore it due to his many other acts of kindness. The Rogue’s Reluctant Rose has all the elements of a good story: a secret, a threat to reveal said secret, and many longing glances and sensual daydreams. Author Daphne du Bois did a great job setting scenes, however I would have loved to see more evidence of Araminta and Jasper falling in love.

Despite a few missteps, The Rogue’s Reluctant Rose is a sweet historical romance that you can lose yourself in for a few hours.
