If you like your fantasy served up in epic proportions with all the fantastical trimmings that the genre has to offer, The Story of Evil by Tony Johnson is for you. Originally released one by one over ten years as separate books titled Heroes of the Siege, Escape from Celestial, Three Visions, The Cursed King, and Battle for the Kingdom, the five volumes are now joined in a complete story of adventure and sacrifice on a heroic scale. Set in a complex medieval-like world teeming with conflict from its creation, this classic struggle between good and evil introduces a varied array of characters and creatures that is sure to entertain and a dramatic action-filled plot certain to engage many young adult and adult readers alike.
In The Story of Evil, Tony Johnson gives us an imaginary world and a power struggle that raises important questions about life on our own. As one of his characters states, “It’s more complex than good versus evil.” While readers will be fully entertained by the twists and turns of the dramatic plot and the development of the protagonists, both good and evil, as they survive or succumb along the way, I found myself intrigued by the moral issues that connect this medieval fantasy to our world today. While massive death and destruction in the fight for survival are serious matters even when fictional, I also chuckled at the repartee between some of the role-players and was moved by the depth of feelings and emotions that are evoked through dialog and action. “We’re damaged, but not irreparably,” one says to another. “I can tell you what’s helped me so far: I keep trying to focus on the days to come, not the days behind us.” An engaging read.
