The Taverna at the Edge of Night by H. Y. Hanna is the first book in the Deadly Destinations series. Daphne is in Crete for a long overdue reunion with her best friend, but when she arrives at the taverna in a remote fishing village, everything starts to unravel fast. Her friend Roxy is on edge, nobody wants to talk, and there are rumors of a murder. An attack leaves Daphne reeling, but Roxy won’t answer her questions except to lie, and Daphne is no longer sure what’s going on or who she can trust. When she decides to find out what’s going on for herself, she finds herself in deep trouble, caught in a cat-and-mouse game where everyone seems to be hiding something, especially Roxy. In a race against time, Daphne must work out what’s going on and find out if her friend really was involved in a murder.
The Taverna at the Edge of Night by H. Y. Hanna is a suspenseful thriller where nothing is what it should be and where appearances hide deadly secrets. The writing style transports you straight to the island of Crete, where readers soon learn that stunning locations can hide some pretty deadly secrets. It’s a page-turner, with a plot that draws you in from the first page. It feels a bit like a cozy mystery but with a much darker twist, a unique plot, and some very memorable characters. You’ll get to know the main character, Daphne, very well and find her easy to relate to—we can only hope that, as this is the first in a new series, she might be featured in all subsequent stories. There’s plenty of action, but it’s steady, as is the suspense as the sense of betrayal builds gradually throughout, and a little romance along the way helps lighten the drama. If you love stories written by authors like Daphne du Maurier, you’ll love this book, as it’s very similar in style.
