Escaping from the zoo can be fun. The White Gorilla and the Three Chimpanzees...a Day From the Zoo, by Saragine Francois, is a tale well told. Chef, the huge gorilla, and his three chimp pals Dancer, Brainless, and Smarty, all have a furry role to play by causing mischief when they break free. It is no wonder that these four pals want to get out from behind the bars of the zoo. Who wouldn't want to roam free and have a fun adventure? With the help of Chef's magic cane (which puts a spell on a hapless human), the four characters drive away in the humans' car. They decide they are hungry, so they visit a grocery store to find a banana or two. The people in the store naturally run away. But of course, these critter companions are no threat to anyone. They find themselves at a girl's birthday party where they are mistaken for humans in animal costumes.
However, this story is not all about a fun adventure. The gorilla and chimps have caused some trouble at the zoo and in the town. They are safely recovered with a policeman's help. The policeman was not under the magic cane's spell. The story has a nice, color background and an easy-to-read text. Saragine Francois takes the reader on a fun romp through the town. There is some dialogue but most of the plot points are described by the character's actions. The colorful and distinct illustrations by Brian Rice help bring the story to life.
