The Wolf Riders of Keldarra is the first book in an exciting new series called The Stone of Truth. This is a fantasy series and I am looking forward to the next book. What I like about it most is that it is a slow reveal. The characters don’t really know the history of their world and we get to learn that history, step by step, clue by clue, as they do. I like the literary device of a stone of truth as a way to find out the truth of the past as well as a way to plot a better future. Such a magic is more passive than action based and, as such, requires intelligence and a certain flexibility of character in order to be effective. This can make for a good novel in the hands of the right author and Nathalie M.L. Römer seems to have good hands indeed.

What I liked most about The Wolf Riders of Keldarra is the character development. Alagur is a great protagonist. He is a wolf rider and he is good at what he does. He has been thrown into a bad situation with some bad people, but his innate goodness compels him to try to change things. Marrida is a woman who saves him and she has a situation and ability that is the key to saving a lot of people. When these two are thrown together, it is fate and important for the whole world. There are other great characters, mostly members of Marrida’s family, but just as likable and intriguing is Alagur’s great silver and white wolf, Yalla. This is a long epic tale and Nathalie M.L. Römer does a great job of unfolding it.
