After spending a month mourning the loss of the grandmother she cared for in the years before Alzheimer’s claimed her life, Tracey heads to her newly inherited beach house in Maine. Her goal is to take a break from her life and the reminder of the life and apartment she shared with her beloved grandmother. At the beach house, Tracey plans to stay a few months, soak up some sun, and return to the life of a 24-year-old just as she promised her Grandma Beth. It is at the beach in Maine where Under The Sun really begins. Jude Ouvrard does a great job of describing Tracey’s next door neighbor, the affable and handsome Jackson Phillips and his hidden pain. Tracey and Jackson become fast friends with an instant spark of attraction.
The best thing about Under The Sun was the easy relationship that developed between Tracey and Jackson. Although they both had their own personal hurts to deal with, it didn’t stop them from opening up to one another in an effort to heal and feel something again other than pain. Jude Ouvrard tells a sober story of two people determined to live life to the fullest after a devastating loss. While Under The Sun isn’t an emotional read or filled with melodrama, it is powerful nonetheless. Being witness to Tracey and Jackson’s journey is humbling as they are two strong characters who are only stronger together. Despite the quick read, Ouvrard does pack a whole story into just a few pages.
