Keith A. Hartzler’s Whispers on the Swing is a Christian collection of short prayers and questions written as a private conversation with God. Hartzler begins by telling readers these lines came to him during time with his Creator, then lets each page hold one thought. Some ask for guidance during fear, while others give thanks for an ordinary day. A prayer about dirty feet recalls Jesus washing His disciples' feet, while sitting on a swing becomes an invitation to pause with God. His prayers also make room for grief. Forgiveness returns often as Hartzler asks to hear God more readily. The book closes by inviting readers to pray with the honesty of children and speak freely to God as the Father. Whispers on the Swing is written for Christians who want prayer to feel like daily conversation.
Keith A. Hartzler’s Whispers on the Swing is a wonderful Christian devotional collection, and Hartzler’s voice makes prayer feel companionable. I love how humor sits naturally beside worship. His hourglass thought about God giving us “just a bit” of a tap is genuinely funny, yet it also asks whether discomfort may be prompting. Eleanor Mathews’s illustrations deserve a share of the praise. Her pencil drawings of acorns and oak leaves give the white pages a gentle visual rhythm. Small plants appear throughout the book in varied forms, giving Hartzler’s conversations with God a quiet natural setting, and the fine botanical lines sit beautifully beside the words. Well written and a simple visual treat, readers seeking short Christian prayers for quiet moments will adore this. Very highly recommended.
