Why Can't Things Just Stay the Same by Dr. Barbara Walls is about a young boy named Max who is anxious about his first day of school after being homeschooled. He’s scared that school would be too different from his mom, who understood his needs, routines, and uniqueness. Max prays for a kind teacher and friendly classmates as he clings to his teddy at night. At the bus stop, his mother reassured him that he would be loved because he was bright and kind and that God would always be with him. Max nervously but bravely rode the bus even though no one sat beside him. When his hat got dirty after he fell in the mud, he continued despite the mishap and went to his new classroom in room 12. Or was it room 21? He was worried about not being understood. Would his peers accept him despite his seemingly odd habits, quirks, and sensitivities? Would he remember to put his hands in his pockets whenever he felt jumpy? Would he be able to handle any icky stuff, line up his toys, or remember what task he should be doing without his picture board? Would everything be all right even if things can’t stay the same, just like at home?

Why Can't Things Just Stay the Same by Dr. Barbara Walls offers a gently paced narrative and a positive message to encourage quiet courage, self-worth, faith, and the importance of having the right support and an environment that helps struggling and neurodiverse individuals cope with change. It tells the reader that certain new experiences can be another version of what you already know or have, allowing for their smooth transition, acceptance, and a feeling of safety. The simple illustrations by Anissa Carlos complement the narrative by depicting Max's emotional journey and the elements of his home and school settings as he goes beyond his usual comfort zone. This picture book is an especially valuable read for anxious kids dealing with change and adjustments. This is an excellent resource for parents and educators, giving examples of inclusive classroom practices, the positive portrayal of neurodiversity and adaptive behaviors, and faith-based reassurance as a source of comfort, calm, confidence, and dealing with fear.
