Helga ‘Hellgate’ ATE was a night hawk pilot, one of the most popular heroes that the Alliance soldiers loved to discuss in the ‘Sixth Expanse’ battle on the planet of Meluvia. With her ship called the Mifune, Helga valiantly fought Geralos, an alien race of lizard men that threatens the existence of humanity again and again. Lady Hellgate by Greg Dragon tells the life story of Helga ATE before the battle of Sixth Expanse, how a tiny woman became the greatest pilot in the Anstractor Alliance. Helga’s father, Algo ATE, was a hardy Sergeant in the Vestalian Army, but became heavily traumatized after the war which led to his suicide. Helga’s mother died broken-hearted not long after that tragic event, which prompted Helga to join the military.
The plot is tightly-written and the action scenes are probably the best I have read so far in the sci-fi fantasy genre; exceptionally and vividly written. It is as if I could hear the sound of explosions, the noise that Helga’s ship makes, as well as the intense dogfights between the Alliance soldiers and the Geralos. The story cleverly weaves this in with Helga’s own resentment after discovering a terrible secret that can destroy the Alliance military from within – this is my favorite twist of the story. Greg Dragon’s writing is rich with a multitude of edgy yet fascinating characters, especially Helga, who is an intriguing ball of emotion. Readers will never feel left behind as the real emotions underlying the action-packed events keep us connected all the way to the end.
