Phyllis and Ethel are off on their holidays, and they have planned for everything. Well, everything except the weather. When they get thrown off course and land on a cruise ship, it’s the start of an adventure they never dreamed they would have. Hungry and tired, they set off around the ship in their food search, but they keep getting sidetracked with games and shows. Desperate to find food, they spot an island in the distance and decide it’s time to start their real holiday. What happens when the rest of the passengers overhear them and want to join them?
What Do You Feed a Flamingo? by Lee Porter is bound to be a hit with kids. It’s a colorful picture book, with stunning illustrations by Katelyn Heinlein, that follows two flamingos who have the adventure of a lifetime. It is an imaginative story and a lot of fun to read, but it also introduces children to the majestic flamingo and teaches them a lot about these brightly colored birds. They’ll learn where flamingos live and what they eat, but they’ll also learn about working together to solve problems and about friendship and curiosity. Most of all, while younger children will enjoy a cool, quirky story, older children will learn that being thrown into an unexpected situation doesn’t mean disaster; it means making the best of it and finding a way through. The story encourages kids to ask questions, and it’s perfect for the whole family to read together.
