Stuff!: The Things No One Ever Told Us About Life After Sexual Abuse by Edna J. White is an autobiographical tale of one woman's abuse. Edna's abuse started at the age of five. When she told, at age 9, her family believed her but wanted to sweep the story under the rug. Her abuser is still a respected member of her family. As she grew up, Edna wondered how her abuse affected her as a teenager, as a young woman exploring sexuality, in the men that she chose to be with and the men she ran away from. Stuff! is a very sad but also uplifting true story about how abuse affects people and families and generations in so many different ways. It wants to open up a dialogue so that other women do not have to go through the same cycle of self-doubt and self-hate that Edna endured.
This story really tugged at my heartstrings and was a difficult read for me because of the subject matter. Some readers may find this subject matter difficult to deal with, which is unfortunate because it is a story that needs to be told (and read). Readers that have suffered abuse or know someone in this type of situation will especially be affected. I hope readers will have the courage to read this story because I think this type of abuse and self-loathing can be stopped if more people are aware of what happens and how we can learn and grow from these experiences.
