A Journey with Panic: With the Latest Advice on How to Stop Panic Symptoms Using CBT, by Dr. James Manning and Dr. Nicola Ridgeway, is a must-read guide for anyone dealing with panic attacks. Beginning with the foreword, Dr. Manning shares his personal life experiences with panic, making this book unique and relatable to the reader. The physiology of panic is detailed, giving a rational explanation of what physical reactions one experiences and why the attacks feel so scary. The charts and graphs are also very helpful, as well as the summary of main points at the end of each chapter. The inclusion of worksheets enhances the modality of cognitive-behavioral therapy, as the person with panic attacks can work through their experiences on both “thinking” and “doing” levels.

For people who experience panic attacks, or for those who are close to them, Dr. James Manning and Dr. Nicola Ridgeway have written a comprehensive and convincing book in A Journey with Panic: With the Latest Advice on How to Stop Panic Symptoms using CBT. The writing is very clear and easy-to- understand, even though there is scientific and psychological information included. The diagrams add to the flow of information, and each chapter builds upon the previous one. The chapters seem to cover all aspects, including such topics as approaching feelings, how to respond to distressing thoughts, and preventing relapse. One of the best features of this book is the authors’ ability to present a large amount of information, with instructions, in an understandable format. Even more important is the compassionate, supportive tone emanating throughout the text. A truly wonderful book!

A Journey With Panic: With the Latest Advice on How to Stop Panic Symptoms Using CBT By Dr. James Manning and Dr. Nicola Ridgeway is a practical guide to managing anxiety with cognitive behavior therapy. This book gives definitions for all of the parts of the mind involved in a panic attack. It shows the reader techniques for managing these parts and thereby managing the symptoms of anxiety. It contains worksheets and exercises. Dr. Manning and Dr. Ridgeway believe that a person who is seeking help managing anxiety would be able to use this book on their own. They also advise that someone suffering from anxiety could use these exercises and make the most of one on one therapy sessions. In the foreword, Dr. Manning confesses that he used to suffer from severe anxiety and has developed his techniques after years of personal therapy and working as a professional with patients.

This is a five out of five stars guide. This book has a beautiful layout and is easy to read. It presents the information in a neat, clean way. The worksheets can be copied and used for therapy. Suffering from an anxiety disorder can be debilitating, but can be modified and even cured with the right approach and techniques. Dr. Manning and Dr. Ridgeway's A Journey With Panic has a glossary and more suggested reading in the back. I think it is worthwhile for everyone because the techniques for working on anxiety can be used for other behavioral problems.

In an excellent new guide by authors with a very high credibility, Dr. James Manning and Dr. Nicola Ridgeway, A Journey with Panic is a book that those or their loved ones who deal with panic attacks will find themselves turning to time and time again. Providing ways for an individual to practice working themselves through a panic attack, using a good understanding of cognitive behavioral therapy, this book could serve as a manual for the average person on how to deal with panic disorders. Exercises and CBT worksheets are included within the book, and readers will find all of the information entirely useful. Authors Manning and Ridgeway have written an up to date guide, using the very latest information and techniques that they use in their own practices, and have certainly created a wonderful tool and service to their readers.

I found A Journey with Panic to be a highly useful and innovative guide that many, many individuals would find exceedingly helpful in their everyday lives. The authors suggest it as a companion to therapeutic treatment, which would certainly be recommended, but the information provided will do much to aid many, even on its own. It is easy for me to give this book my very highest recommendation, and to suggest that anyone dealing with panic or a panic disorder should read this as soon as they possibly can. I certainly hope that authors Dr. James Manning and Dr. Nicola Ridgeway will team up for another similar endeavor in the future. If they do, it will certainly be a book worth reading!

A Journey with Panic: With the Latest Advice on how to Stop Panic Symptoms using CBT by Dr. James Manning and Dr. Nicola Ridgeway is a great starting point for anyone attempting to use CBT in conjunction with their therapy for panic attacks. The book begins with personal background information so you have an introduction to the material and the writer, then goes into the medical reasons for a panic attack. The reader will learn how the brain functions during a panic episode, how panic attacks come on from seemingly nowhere, and how the brain remembers past experiences and stressful situations. There are also many worksheets included to use along with CBT, and this should help the reader keep track of symptoms as well as help them understand the situations in which panic occurs (triggers). To lighten what is a difficult subject for many, there are funny illustrations here and there, which was enjoyable. Finally, the reader will learn to make anxiety their friend rather than their enemy, they will learn the common medications used to help with their panic attacks, and they will understand the treatments available for panic attack sufferers as well.

As someone who has dealt with panic attacks for nearly twenty years, this book was appreciated. One of the book’s highlights was an author who clearly wanted to help others and knew the subject through firsthand experience. There are many ways to stop a panic attack — breathing, acceptance, and worksheets to organize feelings — and authors Dr. James Manning and Dr. Nicola Ridgeway explain all of this and provide the necessary tools to move past panic attacks. While there was not much I had not seen before in reading information on panic attacks, the book is certainly a great starting place for those on the road to recovery from panic disorder. I would have loved to see a full list of panic symptoms included, but the ones that are included are broken down so that the panic sufferer knows how to handle the symptoms when they arise (and that they are not as dangerous as believed during a panic episode). Also, the worksheets were quite unique and should help readers organize their symptoms and triggers.

A Journey with Panic: With the Latest Advice on how to Stop Panic Symptoms using CBT is recommended for those who want to learn about this subject, those studying psychology, and for those who suffer from panic attacks and want to get past the disorder once and for all.

When you are faced with challenging and high stress situations, do you ever experience the following: 1) symptoms of having a heart attack; 2) excessive sweating; 3) feel like fainting; or 4) suffocation? If you answered Yes to at least three of these questions, then you may be a victim of a panic attack. What is a panic attack? According to authors, Dr James Manning and Dr Nicola Ridgeway in their latest book, A Journey with Panic: With the Latest Advice on How to Stop Panic Symptoms using CBT, a panic attack is a series of reactions that affects the whole body - from the brain, heart, sensory, and blood pressure to the digestive system - due to perceived fight or flight threats or danger.

To set the stage in overcoming panic attacks, Manning tells of his journey in battling anxiety. Despite his parents being high achievers and in doing their best to raise him, as a teenager he began to feel inadequate, empty, and experienced bouts of depression. Manning noticed that as he got older, specific social interactions would make him feel strange and uneasy. During these times he was having panic attacks, so he sought counseling. It was Dr. Ridgeway that taught Manning Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) exercises. It was her help and these exercises, that he continues today, that helped him to overcome these emotions. In A Journey with Panic: With the Latest Advice on How to Stop Panic Symptoms using CBT you will learn everything about panic attacks, perform exercises, and do assignments to help you to counteract these attacks.

It is true, as stated in A Journey with Panic, that people suffering panic attacks is more common than realized. I myself as a public speaker and educator, at times, may experience mild panic attacks, even after being in the business for over ten years. It was pure enjoyment to be able to read information that contains so much valuable advice, even on the technical side. As stated in A Journey with Panic, in order to overcome the challenges of panic attacks you must change your self-talk, the messages that you tell yourself. If your panic attacks seem to be taking over your life, you need a copy of A Journey with Panic: With the Latest Advice on How to Stop Panic Symptoms using CBT by Dr James Manning and Dr Nicola Ridgeway.
