Dark as Night by T.J. Hawkins is a thrilling novella that serves as a prequel to Sleeper. This story focuses on Mohammed Baqri, a psychopathic member of Al-Qaeda set on becoming an infamous terrorist. Mohammed, the youngest of three brothers, is shown to have a strained relationship with his parents, especially his father, Azim. Mr. and Mrs. Baqri noticed Mohammed’s love for cruelty from an early age. Their attempts to make him a decent member of society are futile. Moreover, they fail to realize that their oldest son, Rahim, will also turn into a terrorist. It is Rahim who invites Mohammed to join Al-Qaeda. Their role in the organization seems to be masterminding assassinations. The Baqri brothers have hearts as dark as night.
Dark as Night by T.J. Hawkins is an enjoyable read. I look forward to following Mohammed’s story in Sleeper. The character was well fleshed out. His ruthless nature is evident, and his criminal plans are brilliant. The other characters are also well-written. Hawkins gives even minor characters backstories and provides us with insight into their thoughts, which is an excellent use of writing in the third person. Additionally, the action scenes gripped me. The scenes are easy to visualize due to the clear descriptions. I found the various dialogues in the story realistic and I enjoyed the pacing of the story. Every scene flowed into the next one. Splitting this brief novella into sixteen chapters may have also helped with the pacing. This story is thought-provoking.
