Hooker Avenue by Jode Millman is a part of the Queen City Crimes series. Jessie is a single mom on the long road to divorce and a criminal defense attorney. Driving home from work in the midst of a storm, Jessie comes across an unconscious woman in a ditch – Lissie Sexton, prostitute and key witness in a cold case being investigated by Detective Ebony Jones, who was once Jessie’s best friend. This case is about to throw Jessie and Ebony together again as Lissie suddenly disappears and Jessie finds herself caught up in the hunt for a predator. Ebony thinks Lissie is the key to finding the killer but Jessie knows where Lissie is and won’t tell Ebony. Jessie is caught between a rock and a hard place. While she wants to help crack the case, she has to consider her legal ethics. Jessie and Ebony need to put the past behind them and work together to solve these cold cases. Can they get Lissie to identify who attacked her and stop a cold-blooded killer in his tracks?
Hooker Avenue by Jode Millman intrigued me right from the word go. The second book in the series, it reintroduces us to a few characters from the first book but it could be read quite easily as a standalone story. Written by an attorney, the story is based on a true crime committed a few decades ago. Jode Millman has brought all her experience to the table and written a highly credible story with believable, likable characters. The attention to detail is second to none and it really makes you feel part of it. It is an action-packed story with tons of twists and turns and more than enough suspense to keep you hooked all the way through. The tension rises steadily in this gripping tale and you’ll find yourself invested in the main storylines – the hunt for the serial killer and Jessie and Ebony’s relationship. This is a many-layered story and if you love police procedurals and true crime stories, you’ll love this one.
