School shootings and other acts of mass violence are equal parts horrifying and baffling. As the initial shock and grief ease up, we can’t help but ask: why? When a terrorist organization strikes, as vile as it is, we at least understand its goals, ideologies, and history. But there’s something extra disturbing about lone individuals who one day just decide to destroy the lives of several people, often including their own. How Rampage Killers Interpret Their Worlds, from S. Lee Funk, Ed.D., tackles this subject with a combination of data, research, theory, and case studies. While the author’s previous work focused on social, environmental, pathological, and other external factors, this one highlights psychology, tracing a path from the origins of the violent mindset to the attack and aftermath when there is one.

I’ve been interested in this topic for a while, but the simplistic, sensationalized way much of the media treats it often disappoints me. Thankfully, this is a serious scholarly work based on the relevant literature and reliable sources. S. Lee Funk, Ed.D., excels at synthesizing information from multiple sources and presenting it in a digestible way, building a logical, step-by-step approach for understanding a rampage killer’s mind. That said, reader discretion is advised. There’s nothing explicit, but the book shows unfiltered words from killers (featuring slurs, hate speech, and other upsetting content) and describes massacres in general terms. It’s also a dense academic work, not a light read. But if you’re interested in criminology and can handle the grisly subject and academic language, How Rampage Killers Interpret Their Worlds is a must-read.
