Legacy is a work of fiction in the fantasy and adventure sub-genres and was penned by author C. J. Pyrah. Written for young adult audiences, the novel forms the opening book in The Dead God Series. The novel begins in the traditional call to action style of many fantasy quests, as we see young no-hoper Torben drawn into an incredible world where mayhem and destruction reign supreme: Ulskandar. In this cut-throat realm where tribal battles rage on and everyone is constantly fighting for their lives, Torben finds the opportunity to rise up and be more than he ever imagined he could be.
Author C. J. Pyrah has honored all of the traditional elements which make epic fantasy novels truly great and rounded them up into a modern and highly engaging new take on sword and sorcery. Tolkien fans are certain to find plenty to enjoy whilst they discover the world of Ulskandar and I, for one, found the worldbuilding to be unobtrusive but consistent, always building an atmosphere and a history as Torben gets more and more settled in this dangerous new place. The different races are well fleshed out and cleverly elevated from their original stereotypes, producing a varied cast of personalities so that everyone can have someone to favor and root for. The dialogue, too, was crisp and modern, yet hangs on to some of old inflections and flavors to blend old and new extremely well. Overall, I think Legacy is an accessible traditional fantasy novel that will be sure to captivate modern teens. A recommended read.
