Little Fortified Stories is an enchanting collection of short and flash fiction stories by Barbara Black. A man refuses to set free the ones he loves the most, leading to their untimely demise. The obsessive study of Spinoza leaves a young woman unfit for civil society as her progressive values threaten to alter the status quo. A down-on-his-luck dentist finds himself in the crosshairs of the law. A young woman blessed with fur unexpectedly finds her true love after becoming a beekeeper. A woman discovers different sides of a mother, which include caring, nurturing, and secretive. A couple builds their young daughter, who thrives in the cold, a homestead in the north, but nothing lasts forever. A seemingly ordinary man's passing reveals a few secrets about his life no one could've foreseen.

Barbara Black has written a mesmerizing collection of short fiction stories that touch your soul. Through this enthralling anthology, the author displays a poetic flair that is authentic and unique. There is an almost lyrical quality to Black's prose that is simply delicious to savor. The stories are surreal, at times absurd, and deeply immersive. Some of these tales are open to interpretation as Black leaves a lot to the reader's imagination, which brings a different kind of enjoyment. Many of the narratives are based on spirits (alcohol) and are inspired by various artwork, music, photographs, places, and even dreams. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to flash and short fiction lovers.
