Celine Arceneau’s Bon Voyage party ended in disaster when all the guests were struck by food poisoning. Thanks to the quick actions of Chef George, paramedics arrived swiftly and managed to stabilize everyone—but Celine’s symptoms were far worse. Within twenty-four hours, she was dead. Dr. Ellen Smythe demands to know why. In Locked Box by Rebecca A. Miles, Kate Chambers, Ellen’s friend and former colleague, and Kate’s friend, Joan, become involved in solving the mystery behind Celine’s death. Everyone, including the police, finds the death suspicious. Did a hidden medical condition make Celine fatally vulnerable to the poison? They must determine whether poison was slipped into Celine’s food to kill only her, making others merely ill. Now, after incidents targeting Kate, they wonder if there is a connection between Celine’s death and Kate’s new troubles.
Rebecca A. Miles takes us on a complex journey in Locked Box, weaving together characters, situations, and events to reveal what happened to Celine. As the story unfolds, Miles drops clues suggesting motives and opportunities of more than one suspect. The abundance of plot twists surrounding Celine’s killer genuinely surprised me. Yet, on reflection, each motive made sense and tied together seamlessly. I appreciated that Kate, although an amateur detective, supports rather than overshadows the local police’s expertise, which is quite often the case with mysteries involving amateur detectives. With skill, Miles intertwines a parallel plot about Kate and her stalker, reopens a cold case, and deftly blends both narratives into one intriguing story.
