In Mercie's Secret by Michael Garrett, Lucas Bonham witnesses a van ram a car and the driver, Mercie Halford, being kidnapped. He follows and intervenes, using wasp spray to rescue her. Mercie explains that she is being targeted by Crank Robinson, a man she encountered in a prison ministry where she volunteered, and that his associates have repeatedly threatened her life. Lucas agrees to help her retrieve belongings from the van while avoiding police attention. During their attempt, Lucas realizes that the assailant might be dead. Mercie pressures Lucas to conceal any evidence, escalating his involvement. They hide from law enforcement, coordinate travel and communications, and take precautions to stay unseen, until Mercie makes a shocking claim that puts Lucas's entire life and future on the line.
Michael Garrett’s Mercie’s Secret is a suspenseful and carefully plotted story that shows two different, supremely calculated decisions by Lucas and Mercie. It's interesting how Garrett links careful movements with close attention to detail that comes across with a unique realism, like monitoring news reports, preparing safe exits, and handling encounters with detectives, all while maintaining the characters’ caution and vigilance. Lucas and Mercie are interesting characters with a fragile and clearly misplaced demonstration (by Lucas) of trust, patience, and responsiveness, and the original stages of their collaboration feel genuine. With a steady unfolding of events and a focus on relatable reactions to danger, the book is an absorbing read for those who enjoy suspense grounded in attention to detail in every step of an unpredictable situation. Recommended.
