In Moxie: A Novella, Lindsey J. Mercer introduces readers to Lena, a girl who loves to write, and is just figuring out her own life. I also really liked the scenes where Lena spoke about writing. It captured the real essence of what I feel when I write, and what I have heard other authors talk about when they write. Lena goes through a very self exploratory and stormy change. You feel her suffering, her angst, her desire to be a different person than who she is today. While the novella is short, it piques enough interest and has enough detail to encourage readers into really looking into who Lindsey Mercer is, and what she's all about.
I liked Lena, the main character, a lot. Maybe because she is a self proclaimed "oddball" and I am a big fan of the nerdy or "out-there" kinds of main characters, she really resonated with me. The novella was surprisingly deep for so short a piece and I felt immediately attached to the character and to her story. Lindsey Mercer speaks to every disenchanted youth, young adult, and "new adult" who has ever gone through life changes that make them confused, bewildered, and scared. There was a lot of literary gold in such a short piece and I was really glad that I got a chance to read it. Moxie speaks to more than just one person, class, or race. It speaks to every person who has ever had a moment of searing, painful doubt and then found the strength to keep moving on.
