New Light: Volume 1 by Scott McDowell is a young adult science fiction novel about a new, oppressive land. Because the world is covered in darkness, it is naturally obsessed with light. There are three characters within this world that set out on a terrifying journey. Isabel, Saul, and Lans take on a conflict that few within their land even knew existed. The three are charged with the task of confronting Dusk, a god that is in control of death and withering. Journeying toward Dusk and their ultimate confrontation takes the three well beyond the boundaries of their world and outside their comfort zone and what they safely know. But they can't give up. They must win this challenge or else die trying.
This is a very interesting science fiction story that shows readers just how fragile the human race is. It is full of vivid imagery and intense battle scenes that help the reader fall in love with this dark and desolate world. The world building was done nicely by the author and readers will appreciate the time and care that went into creating such an intensely descriptive setting. The monsters are also intriguing and described well. The story has gripping characters and the author does a nice job of showing the reader the dynamics between each of the characters. They all have something to teach the reader through their heroism, but also their flaws. This makes the reader think about the characters and the story long after the book is done.
