When I read the words, “Have you felt lost, misunderstood, desperate, and helpless?” on the rear cover of this book, I knew that I had to read it. Who among us hasn’t felt this way at one time or another? Although I have never considered suicide, I did feel as though I could relate to author Molly Fiore’s struggle to accept herself. In the foreword to her book, Fiore states that her book is for anyone who feels as if people don’t “get” them, anyone who has ever felt alone, and anyone who is unhappy in his or her life. I think this book also appeals to others who see Fiore’s story as a motivational one that will inspire others to search for personal freedom.
The author reveals her story and ideas to us in chapters such as “My Shame,” “Going Beyond My Fear,” “Laughing at My Absurdity,” “My Icky Behavior,” and “Letting Love In.” The best thing about this book is that it is a reflection of a real person’s real personal struggles instead of some expert “Self Help Guru” trying to tell you what to do. Fiore has been there and has done that, so it is easier to listen to her than to someone who hasn’t walked in her shoes.
Molly Fiore is now an advocate for suicide prevention programs in schools. It is a story of courage and a personal journey that people will relate to and use to encourage others.
