Past Imperfections: A Matti James Mystery, Book 3 is a private investigator mystery written by M.A.R. Unger. Matti and her fellow detective club members are now officially The Foothill Canyons Detective Agency, but they still had not yet been retained by their first paying client until a metallic blue Jaguar pulled into the driveway of their offices, and a strangely familiar blond woman came through the front door. As Mattie asked her to take a seat, she was stunned by the realization that the woman was none other than Layla Bourne, the famous singer/songwriter and celebrity. Layla’s convinced that someone is out to kill her, a conviction confirmed when she noticed the threatening letters on her husband’s desk in the mansion the couple were occupying. She had gone there, furious at being left behind from the plane trip that was to take her to Los Angeles, but seeing those letters made her fear for her life. She wants Matti and her agency to find out who’s threatening her and have the matter taken care of. Matti is pleased and proud to tell her partners about their first client, but she’s stunned by the news that Ms. Layla Bourne was killed in a plane crash several weeks before she met her.
M.A.R. Unger’s private investigator mystery, Past Imperfections: A Matti James Mystery, Book 3, is fast-paced and exciting. This is the third book in the Matti James Mystery Series, and the author gives just enough background to allow new readers to enjoy the story on its own, and to remind readers of the previous novels and what had gone on before. I was pleased to see that the club had actually made themselves into a full-fledged detective agency, and enjoyed seeing how the partners interacted with each other and the authorities in attempting to make sense of the mystery at hand. Unger adds a neat touch of the paranormal to this series in the persons of Matti’s dog, Fluffy, who has an affinity for finding and communicating with the dead, and Abby, Matti’s Inbetweener friend, who is a deceased Las Vegas showgirl and a marvelous foil and companion for the detective. There are lots of puzzles for the agency and the reader to unravel in this well-plotted and satisfying mystery, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. Past Imperfections is highly recommended.
