Have you ever wondered how Tinker Bell and Peter Pan first met? Pixie Dust and Other Dangerous Things by Jessica Brenner is a reimagined retelling of the classic Peter Pan tale through the eyes of Tinker Bell herself. The story opens in the present as Tinker Bell overhears Peter making a claim that both hurts her and feels impossible to believe. That moment convinces her it’s finally time to share her perspective. Readers are taken back to her origins, from her birth and naming as Bell to her fascination with humans from the very start. Everything changes when she discovers a neglected baby in Kensington Gardens. Hoping to protect his adventurous spirit from the strict life he was born into, she takes him somewhere special. Once there, the duo encounters magical creatures, unexpected danger, and a friendship that becomes far more complicated than either of them expected. Will Bell ever take him home? And how does he meet the Darlings?

Roald Dahl said, “Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” It’s easy to believe that after reading Pixie Dust and Other Dangerous Things by Jessica Brenner. Tinker Bell has always been my all-time favorite fairy tale character, and she’s the reason I started loving fairies in the first place. Seeing her portrayed with so much emotion, humor, stubbornness, and heart made this book especially enjoyable for me. The first-person point of view brought her personality to life. The writing is smooth, creating a magical atmosphere throughout. From an educator’s perspective, discussions on topics like growing up, friendship, and how different people can remember the same events in completely different ways could be done after reading. Students could also compare both versions of the Peter Pan story or even create their own fairy-tale retellings. This is such a fun and memorable read. Fans of the original Peter Pan, fantasy adventures, fairy-centered stories, and creative reimaginings of classic tales will likely love this emotional and imaginative take on a beloved world.
