Have you ever heard of Lewis the Lobster, Lolita the Latina Leatherback Turtle and Nancy the Nurse Shark? Well, they are good friends of Pluto the Starfish and they all live in the sea, but they are all different. Pluto is always sad because he is so different from the others. He can’t move fast enough; it takes everything out of him when he moves around in the sand a little as others dart all around him. But should Pluto be sad? No, he shouldn’t. And that is just what all of his friends tell him. Lewis, Lolita and Nancy do their best to help Pluto realize that even though he is different, he is needed in the sea with them, and that he is not there for no reason - he has a very special purpose being there, just as they all do. Do you think Pluto the Starfish will listen to his friends and stop being sad?
I love the valuable lessons taught in this book. And using characters of the sea is a brilliant idea because kids love the beach and all of its critters, and they will relate to what these characters are teaching. And the lesson is that it is okay to be different. In fact, everyone is different, but we are all needed and all have a special place and a special purpose in life. Author Bonnie Anderson knew just the right things to say in this adorable little book! Kids of all ages are sure to want to read Pluto The Starfish, and this will soon be one of their very favorites because of the lessons learned as well as the fabulous illustrations that brighten up the pages as you read. I highly recommend this book to families as well as school libraries and classrooms.
