Second Pocket First by Gregory Grosvenor is a delightful story about an old-fashioned burglar. The main character is Issey, who likes to think of himself as a 'gentleman burglar.' He never carries a gun, never resorts to violence, and never harms anyone; he just helps himself to their possessions. Issey is very good at picking locks of any kind but never seems to steal anything of real value. Issey takes the reader by the hand and slowly leads them on a journey through the life he lives at night, helping himself to people’s things that he feels are in excess. His brother Rohel, sister-in-law Anissa, and niece Madison have quite an influence on Issey as he has on them.

In Second Pocket First by Gregory Grosvenor, the title of the book sheds light on the story as the reader and Issey wander through his adventures, jobs, and various disasters. The reader learns the most interesting things about Issey and his bumbling ways. At times it feels as if Issey and his thoughts are not always of this world, and some of the main characters wonder if he is even living on the same planet, but he is a charming character. This book catches the reader’s attention with its simplicity and humor from the very first chapter to the very last page and an ending that is unexpected but wholly satisfying. I found it a wonderful light read that could be put down and picked up with ease. It is well worth more than one read. An easy read that keeps you smiling throughout the day.

Second Pocket First by Gregory Grosvenor delves into the inner workings of the mind, as well as the fine line between hero and villain. Issey is a compulsive thief who worries more about the tools of his trade and his appearance than he does about being clever and careful in his chosen path in life. When Issey is told he is not required on a major heist being planned, he returns to his hometown of Bell River Valley, Vermont, where his brother and sister-in-law still reside. Excited by the prospect of a whole town of unlocked doors and lax security, he is truly in his element. Issey is not overly particular about what he steals; if it’s not nailed down it goes into Issey’s pocket. When he inadvertently finds himself the town hero, Issey is unsure how to handle his newfound fame, wealth, and adoration. He is torn between his natural tendency to acquire things that don’t belong to him and his sudden rise in status.

Second Pocket First is an interesting look at the thin line between right and wrong. Author Gregory Grosvenor has created an interesting and lovable character in Issey. He is somewhat Walter Mittyesque in his perception of the world, with a tendency to live in his own mind to a large extent. Although he may come across as a bit simple or even stupid, there is no doubt that he knows exactly who he is, a thief, and he is quite comfortable with that. Comedic writing is not an easy task and the author has done a good job of exploring the different humorous situations Issey finds himself in. I particularly enjoyed the unusual romance between Issey and Rhonda/Molly. In many ways, their whole relationship summed up the inherent confusion that was in Issey’s mind. The willingness of the people of Bell River Valley to accept Issey’s arrival and not tie it to the sudden upsurge in crime in the town, apart from the police sergeant, just added to the farcical nature of the story. This is a fun, diverting romp that will amuse. I recommend this book to anyone seeking a pleasant diversion from reality for a few hours.

Second Pocket First by Gregory Grosvenor is an engaging comic novel that follows the misadventures of Issey, an inept but endearing thief with a peculiar code of ethics. Set against a backdrop of New England towns, the story captures Issey’s clumsy attempts at burglary while revealing his unique charm and style. He is not just a thief; he’s a character marked by sartorial flair and a muddled sense of purpose as he roams through life stealing small, odd items while searching for meaning. The plot dives into Issey’s turbulent experiences with an informal criminal group, family dynamics, and the messy landscapes of relationships and ambition.

His encounters with Berger, a crime organizer, reveal the comical nature of his incompetence as a burglar. At the same time, his reflections on his brother Rohel’s life add emotional depth to the narrative. Gregory Grosvenor’s witty writing style, vividly described settings, sharp dialogue, and use of situational irony and imagery meld perfectly with his quirky characters, bringing a fresh voice to the genre. Although Issey’s bumbling ways might suggest a lighthearted tone, the novel explores themes of identity, purpose, the absurdities of life, and the human condition. The prose is marked by dry humor, satire, and clever dialogue that captures the intricacies of human behavior. Second Pocket First delivers humor, heart, and an unconventional perspective on the life of a thief who just can’t seem to get it right. It’s a delightful read for those who enjoy literary fiction infused with comedic undertones and eccentric characters.
