In Shadowsprite and Lightfoot by C. S. Wachter, Prince Keagan Shadowsprite Stormdweller is the heir to Noras Del’sham, a northern kingdom ruled by his father, King Nettlespore. When Nettlespore sends him into Gwenhwyfar Haven to free Lord Shadespawn Fenwright, a captive shadow shifter lord, Keagan accepts a mission meant to prove his worth. A secret command makes the journey more dangerous: Keagan must also kill King Ravenslaine, the ruler who holds Shadespawn. Bran Lightfoot, Keagan’s longtime friend, travels with him, while Bran’s small dragon Willow shadows their path through tunnels, borderlands, and enemy territory. As rival shadow shifter Covah Fenwright moves ahead of them, Keagan is pulled into a larger threat involving the Outten Rift, a danger that could change every kingdom in Terra Nefala.
Shadowsprite and Lightfoot by C. S. Wachter is wonderful speculative fiction, and the author does an excellent job of world-building and scene setting. Keagan is half shadow shifter, a feared bloodline, and part fox aelf, so his fox form affects how strangers treat him. The author puts the characters in gorgeously visual landscapes, from an underground lake cavern where a waterfall tumbles into black water, to King’s Park, where the prison entrance is hidden as a stone grotto near a lake. This is Christian fiction, but Wachter employs symbolism with the restraint of a skilled and seasoned writer, and it feels completely organic. These include Bran’s prayer to the Ancient, the name he uses for God; Senan’s potion, where only a faithful heart can notice the lilac scent; and the use of Elohim, a biblical name for God from Genesis. Well written and immersive, fantasy readers who enjoy faith-shaped quests will adore this book. Very highly recommended.
