The supply chain was largely taken for granted until the COVID-19 pandemic. That triggered a rethink on logistics, as did the advent of AI shortly thereafter. It is into this new world that Joe Hudicka steps with The AI Ecosystem Revolution: Transforming the Global Supply Chain Through Real-Time Collaboration. The traditional supply chain model has become outdated and inefficient, relying on delivery by road, rail, and air to distribution centers before finally reaching the customer. This is time-consuming and ties up capital through the need to hold inventories. The author points out that the longer the supply chain, the more there is to go wrong. AI can provide the solution, as it can process data to predict future demand and optimize production accordingly. This eliminates the middleman and facilitates the delivery of goods directly to the customer. Examples of companies that have already made a transition include Amazon and the fast fashion industry (exemplified by Shein). What is required for an industry-wide change is pooled information, but some companies have concerns over data security. In addition, computer systems are rarely compatible. Collaboration is the key. Shared data, integrated communication systems, and developing mutual trust among role-players become fundamental.

Joe Hudicka grew up during the 1980s, but the school system did not work for him. A turning point came when he was gifted a video game console by his parents, soon followed by a Commodore 64, an early home computer. He taught himself computer software development before specializing in supply chain management. He is critical of the education system and traditional problem-solving methods, remaining forward-looking and promoting the use of new technology. AI is an excellent tool for analyzing data, but its effectiveness is only as good as its input, which is largely influenced by the availability of information on the internet and published sources. It can readily identify trends but cannot necessarily predict future factors, such as another pandemic. Technology advances can be disruptive. The logistics industry may not be ready for radical change just yet, but it is moving faster. The downside may mean job losses, although new skills are needed to use AI, which can be provided through retraining existing staff. The future involves getting to grips with technology, adapting systems to interface, and setting industry standards. The writing style is both informative and entertaining, while the author’s musical analogies add flavor. The AI Ecosystem Revolution incorporates interesting graphics on matters such as an AI Ecosystem Readiness Assessment, the Silent Shift, and Adaptive Forecasting. This thought-provoking work will provide guidelines for forward-looking companies and is highly recommended.
