MacAoidh (Kie) Armstrong is trying to take up residence at The Ring, a lovely Scottish homestead, but unusual events conspire to keep him away in The Ghost Tree by Sara Bain. After an unprovoked attack on a neighbour, Libby Butler is called in as Kie's lawyer, based on the recommendation of retired Met police detective Andrew Prendergast who has been contacted by the family to investigate. This is just the beginning of a long string of unexplained phenomena that grow increasingly destructive in nature. Kie is determined to get to the bottom of things amidst the concerns of his overbearing mother, Barbara, Libby, and even Prendy, both of whom have become good friends with Kie. With the help of a Catholic priest, a group of paranormal specialists, and a Presbyterian minister, Kie and his friends try to rid the property of the menace, but only manage to make things worse. Secrets are plentiful and troubled pasts are uncovered as every avenue is explored to rid the property of the apparent curse. Add in a love story and the plot becomes even more involved. Will Kie and his determination solve the problem or will ancient evil prevail and drive Kie from the property - or even cost him his life?
Sara Bain has written a masterful tale of suspense involving the past, present and possible future of not only the property but also the characters. The Ghost Tree is an excellent story filled with diverse, well-defined characters and deeply integrated action weaving many elements of country life, modern pragmatism, developing relationships, ancient belief, and religious doctrine together to keep you enthralled, turning page after page, living through the nightmare in time with Kie, Libby and the others. The Ghost Tree is a superb example of not only paranormal literature but mystery writing at its finest. Great book. I absolutely loved it!
