Jayson McCallister is exactly what the book title describes: The Reluctant Vigilante by V.K. Vasapolli. But how he got there surprises even our protagonist. He’s simply an accountant, and like any other ordinary person he goes to tennis with his friends, watches TV, and does other mundane things. One day he’s having a good drive down the canyon, enjoying the breeze and the day, when he gets pulled over by Officer Nelson for going two mph over the speed limit. He escapes the consequences by making an appeal at the courthouse, and this irks the officer. They cross paths again but this time, Nelson and yet another cop do an unthinkable act ... and all of a sudden Jayson gets thrust into a world of killing where he takes justice into his own hands.
Exciting and a bit humorous in some parts, The Reluctant Vigilante by V.K. Vasapolli is every bit a brilliant book. While we follow Jayson on his exploits, his self-talk amidst all of it gives us a clear picture of his misgivings with every forward step he takes, and it will get readers hanging onto the edge of their seats, hoping that he makes it out alive. One cannot help but hope for the best as the burden of his double life gets heavier and his options slimmer. It’s one thrilling, suspense-filled novel readers won’t regret spending time reading. The irony is that Jayson has never been into guns at all – before this, he has neither touched nor fired any, and hasn’t had any kind of interest in them. As he finds justice for others, we wonder if he will ever find justice for himself.
