John Lourdes, a young agent of Mexican and English heritage working for the Bureau of Investigation in Texas in 1911, is puzzled when he receives a letter from The Apostle of El Paso. The Apostle wants to meet Lourdes urgently. According to the local folk, the church only wanted two things from people of their kind: money or martyrs. Lourdes has no money. Heeding the call, Lourdes learns that the Bureau, with the Apostle’s blessing, was sending him on a mission. A gang of hooded men had killed a Mexican journalist and his pregnant wife in Laredo. The gang is led by an elusive racist figure only known as “The Whiteman.” They oppressed and killed Mexicans who were crossing over to Texas in large numbers, thanks to a harsh famine and a corrupt government in their country. Lourdes’ task is to seek out and discover the identity of “The Whiteman” and bring him to justice. With the help of a Spanish newspaper editor, his daughter, and a few other allies on this dangerous mission, will Lourdes survive the violence in Laredo and unmask the ruthless murderer? Find out in Boston Teran’s The White Country.

Boston Teran’s The White Country is a must-read for lovers of historical novels with a gripping back story. Teran weaves an intriguing plot using intense prose and paying great attention to detail. The vivid imagery and cinematic depictions colorfully breathed life into the scenes and uniquely captured their mood and setting. Coupled with the storyline’s rich historical depth, all this had me feeling like I was in a time capsule going back to early twentieth-century Texas. I was hurled into the jarring and violent reality of the Mexico-Texas borderlands, with a raw sense of the racism, oppression, social unrest, and injustice that plagued the region. Teran effortlessly switches between sharp, authentic, and well-nuanced dialogue and introspection to bring out the sentiment of the storyline. This and the cast's complex traits allowed me to connect with them and understand their emotions and conflicts. Some of the details of the oppression and injustice against helpless Mexican immigrants were heart-wrenching and almost brought me to tears. This is a page-turner and I loved it.
