Cold is a work of children’s fiction aimed at families and readers of all ages and was written and illustrated by author Brooke Evans-Soukup. In this delightful tale of celebration of the cold weather, the author turns the tables on traditional ideas of a cold, harsh winter, showing all the wonders of the season and the fun and exciting mysteries that it can hold. Set up perfectly for the Christmas season, Cold includes crayon-styled illustrations which give it a homely feel, yet it remains highly professional with engrossing presentation and superb textual effects in its presentation of prose.
Author Brooke Evans-Soukup has developed a delightful tale in Cold where the wonders of the winter season come to its readers with plenty of little surprises and intrigues along the way. With lyricism simple enough that a six or seven-year-old could easily begin to read it independently, it is most impressive that the beauty of the construction of the phrases and the ideology behind its simple celebrations can also touch the hearts of adult readers in a truly sophisticated way. The simple pleasures and comforts of life are drawn well, both in the excellent and eye-catching art style and the clever wordplay of the author. I especially liked the ending, which took me by surprise in a delightful way that I’m certain young readers will adore. Overall, I would highly recommend Cold as both a fun independent read for children, but also as a heartwarming family experience in the winter season.
