Mountain Moon by A.E. Hanaway is a Nova Garrett Series novel. Nova struggles to fit back into her old life, doing whatever she can to regain who she once was and the memories lost to her. The fear of her past threatens her future as she waits for the day her enemy fulfills his promise to return. As her brother does everything he can to protect her, Nova does what she can to live her life her way. She knows everyone is keeping secrets from her, and she's determined to figure out what it is. Two mysterious men vie for her heart, bringing surprises with them. To make matters more complicated, there's a meadow that, on the seventh hour of the fourth day, will show one's true love. Nova believes in this legend, but one day she will discover for herself if it's true.
Nova has an emotional journey, filled with confusion and desperation as she tries to regain what she's lost. She's constantly haunted by memories of being attacked and struggles to find who she is now. Most of her attempts to make a new life seem to come up against obstacles. Everyone around her protects her to the point where they barely want her to do anything. Her frustration is easy to relate to and sympathize with. Adding mystery to the story are the obvious secrets being kept from her, which also provides a slightly ominous quality.
The love triangle has a twist through the use of her memory loss. She's drawn to both Jon and Jay, but she doesn't remember everything about the relationship with either of them. Providing a bit of intensity is the obvious tension between the two men, especially in regards to her. Jon enables her more wild side and prompts her to indulge in it, while Jay is the opposite, being more grounded and serious. He constantly worries over her safety and plays off the more cautious and homebody side of her, while at the same time creating a bit of friction with her. A.E. Hanaway weaves together many layers as Mountain Moon focuses on Nova's emotional journey and her struggle to overcome her past to find a new beginning.
