In Deadly Deceit by Kaylon Tran, twenty-eight-year-old Vanessa Matheny wanted to marry a wealthy man. Vanessa joined Markum Properties, one of the largest real estate firms, hoping to marry one of her affluent clients. Vanessa soon focused on Tony Markum, the attractive son of the company's founder, but ultimately had to accept that he was not on the path to the lifestyle she desired. Jeff was happily married until he found his wife’s lifeless body submerged in the bathtub. Jeff decided it was time to move on, and while looking for a condo near the hospital, Jeff was referred to Vanessa. Vanessa decided that Jeff was the man she wished to marry and deliberately extended the search to help him find the perfect home, allowing them time to get to know one another.
