Dennis McGregor has added a new title to his You Stole My Name series. You Stole My Name Tools features various tools, from hand tools used in woodworking or the kitchen to large construction equipment. Each spread features a picture that combines the animal, which shares all or part of its name, with the tool. A poem written from the animal's point of view accompanies each illustration. The animals include mammals, reptiles, birds, and insects. Some tools will be familiar to children, like hammers and spoons, but others, like a dogleg chisel or cat's paw, will encourage further investigation.
You Stole My Name Tools is a clever introduction to words, specifically tools that share names with animals. The way that Dennis McGregor has integrated each tool with the animal shows how they are similar. The illustrations are stunning! Each handpainted picture is a work of art that features the creature in its natural habitat. I found the Hammerhead Shark and Crane particularly beautiful and mesmerizing. You Stole My Name Tools is also a great vocabulary builder for young children. Curious kids will want to learn more about these tools and how they are used. It will also be a jumping-off point for kids to seek out the names of other items that share animal names. Even the cover art contains a couple of examples not featured in the book. You Stole My Name Tools by Dennis McGregor is a unique and fascinating book sure to please adults and kids alike.
