I Want to Be an Athlete and an Entrepreneur (Coby's Athlete and Career Series, Book 2) is a book for children of kindergarten through third grade ages. It's written by Garrett Carter and illustrated by Anahit Aleksanyan. The starring character in Coby's Athlete and Career Series is Coby, a young African-American boy who dreams of becoming an athlete when he grows up. He tells his mom about it, and she tells him that she thinks he can do just about anything he dreams of. Then she asks him if there are any other things he does really well that he might want to do as well as sports. Coby remembers how he set up a fruit punch stand the summer before. He enjoyed buying his stock, advertising and selling his fruit punch to neighbors and passers-by. He made $50 from the venture and had fun at the same time. Coby's mom tells him that he's already an entrepreneur and explains to Coby and his sister, Lainey, what an entrepreneur is and does.
Garrett Carter's children's book, I Want to Be an Athlete and an Entrepreneur, is the second book in his Coby's Athlete and Career Series. These books help children explore the options and opportunities they'll have when they grow up. Carter doesn't downplay the allure of a professional sports career, rather his stories show how it's possible to have that dream as well as many others. This story works quite well as it shows kids how they don't have to wait till they're grown up to become entrepreneurs. Aleksanyan's illustrations are marvelous, and you can almost taste the fruit punch Coby sells. I Want to Be an Athlete and an Entrepreneur will get kids thinking about their future as well as their present-day lives. It's quite an inspirational read and is highly recommended.
